Introductions / Social Meetups

Hi everyone, I'm Carrie.
The last 6 months of my life have been the most unlucky of my life. From big things to lots of little things every day resulting in a snowball effect.
I decided I'd try change my luck by entering competitions. Can't hurt I guess. I'd love to win things just to make life a little easier for my little family, not setting my sights too high.
I've only just registered and have no idea how this site works so if anyone would like to give me a few tips or tricks I'd be more than willing to hear them.
Going to keep this a little secret from my hubby so if I do win anything it'll be a nice surprise.
Thanks everyone :)

I love surprises like that. Hubby received 5 full-sized bottles of washing up detergent yesterday. He thought he was only going to be receiving sample sizes. Woohoo! We won't need to buy anymore for at least 12 months.

24 Apr 16 2:36 PM

@JoLee lol. God, finally last few days something over 30. Last three days 26, 32, 46 so can't complain.

Might keep me in the Top 20. Need a couple more good days to make sure. Statistically the scores looking a touch low this month to make the Top 20. I think a few more then usual compers have missed a day or so of the guessing game pushing the cut-off down.
Looks like I will be missing out on a birthday prize this month.:( I'll have to settle for extra guesses for the guessing game. :) X fingers.

Looks like a shoot off between the two other birthday compers this month. @FARMERTYSON couple of lengths in front and @CeCee14 closing down fast. Unless there's someone with a birthday in the next few days to pip them at the post, by a nose.

I'm sure there's a correlation between my "crap" daily random points and winning prizes this week, balancing the luck out. It worked for @toxicgherkin this last month. hehe

Lemond
25 Apr 16 9:51 AM

@Lemond I've just jumped to first but that could change very quickly hehe If I stay in second I don't mind at all. I've been getting between 12 & 47 bonus points so I've been lucky. Honestly I'm just waiting for a call, email or letter to say I've won a holiday or cold hard cash lol Positive thinking! Been buying Take 5 & That's life every week so I could also win something from there too ;)

CeCee14
25 Apr 16 10:55 AM

@CeCee14 lol I just noticed. Looks like I wasn't invited to the birthday party this month. Will have to wait to next year. :( Yeh can change very quick. You only got a couple of other members to beat this week unless there's a couple of birthdays to come. Make sure tick off all those competitions. Every comp will count as it's going to be fairly close :)

Lemond
25 Apr 16 11:04 AM

@CeCee14 Your probably technically a handful of points behind still as most likely they haven't checked off today's competitions yet. Sometimes members tick a lot off on the last day hiding down the list.

Tips & Tricks

My tips, I never enter anything to do with 'insurance' otherwise your bombarded with insurance calls and the company trying to force you to purchase insurance.
I never enter voting comps for 2 reasons. 1. People cheat in various ways, so its never fair. 2. I'd rather not ask people to 'vote'.
Anyway that's my personal opinion and what I do or don't do. The choice is always yours.

SunnyLife
19 Apr 16 1:21 PM

That's generally why companies run competitions... so they can bombard you with marketing in various forms. They usually mention this in the terms & conditions. They aren't throwing away money for no reason.

As for voting competitions... just because you aren't bothered to ask people for votes, doesn't mean the people that do get votes are cheaters. You don't know how much effort they have or haven't put in to get votes.

But that's just my opinion.

iliketowinthings
19 Apr 16 1:45 PM

I'm not saying that people that get the votes are cheaters at all. I'm just saying that some people do however cheat by using fake accounts, especially on F.B.

SunnyLife
19 Apr 16 2:21 PM

I won a $2000 gift card from NRMA and they haven't contacted me since so for me it was worth it - but agree with the voting one - my little on entered a coloring comp that was then put on FB to be voted on - the winner won both age divisions 1-5 and 5-10 with 162 votes on each - my little one had 4 votes which was family....seems a bit unfair that the same family won both by getting every FB. It should have been judged by unbiased judges

Well just completed my entries into the De'Longhi Australia photo creative competition by the skin of my teeth. Overcame missing statues, protests in the CBD and PC crashing. Sigh I was hoping to get some pics with the bronze statues at the Docklands, Habour Town with Dame Edna and Dame Melba however they went on holidays a few days ago without telling anyone. Even information didn't realize. I spent two hours looking high and low for them. I found a group of mates thou willing to share coffee and a scrumptious fruit tart instead. It was an adventure and fun day of comping. :) I'm exhausted!!!!

Can check out the entries at Mark Johnstone on Facebook and/or add as friend if wanting to be tagged for competitions, or comment here what you think. Please don't comment on Facebook at least until after judging please. :)

X fingers now for the $4000 coffee machine.

Lemond
19 Apr 16 3:52 PM

@Annaar Did you do the De'Longhi Australia photo creative competition for Sydney? You never know your luck. I just thought that lacked creativity/originality according to the terms and conditions. Most entries were the same, done on the spot. So unless it's a stands out somehow.

Most people who entered probably were not aware of the competition and T&C's and had just wondered past and noticed the great free coffee or maybe checking out the baristas :)

Be up to the judges all subjective. Just hope gave myself a good chance by doing something offbeat then most of the other entries. Thou it wasn't my intention enter a possible controversial pic. hehehe OMG

@toxicgherkin Yes I will do a pickup they suggested instead of having it delivered to St Kilda. They are just up the rd on high st in Malvern about 20 min tram if that. Not having it lost in the post. It would make a good backup drive. Good idea to have a backup OS on another drive if one crashes.

How's your laptop going?

Lemond
19 Apr 16 7:28 PM

@Lemond didn't read T&C as I came out of the job interview & saw them offering coffee... Grabbed a pic & coffee ... Will be ready next time ;-)

Anna2077
19 Apr 16 7:49 PM

@Annaar Nice accidental comp then. Well you know me I read the terms and conditions. They weren't far from me just a quick tram into the city and the weather was great when they were in Melbourne.

I think they are due to message the winners tomorrow and announce on FB on the 22nd I think from memory. So X fingers least one more bad day of random daily points. I had lots of fun with the competition thou. :)

Anyone looking for the bronze statues of Kylie, Graham Kennedy, Dame Melba, Dame Edna etc in the Docklands Harbour Town they are on holidays. Due to upcoming construction.

Lemond
19 Apr 16 11:45 PM

@Lemond I read T&C as well, but when you stumble into a comp you don't ask questions, wasn't time to get creative.... Now I would have, post interview, mind was elsewhere

Missed out on interview as I couldn't answer a question about the company today. They got me as I just walked out of the interview... Needed time to decompress... Made notes at home, but was far away from notes when the phone rang ... Oh well

Anna2077

@Lemond I read T&C as well, but when you stumble into a comp you don't ask questions, wasn't time to get creative.... Now I would have, post interview, mind was elsewhere

Anna2077
20 Apr 16 12:48 AM

@Annaar You had up until last Sunday 5pm. to enter if read the T&C's. You Just had to keep the cup/s for the creative photo to do later. I don't think the baristas would of known the T&C's. More focused on showing off the plug "Primadonna Elite" coffee machine.

Hope you enjoyed the relaxing coffee. :)

My main idea was to get a pic using Dame Melba one of Australia's finest prima donnas and or Dame Edna which is a more colorful statue. I was going on that angle but alias not to be. More gave me a chance to check out Melbourne Docklands. I need to go back to a good wonder. They have an Art precedent all about the Docklands.

Damn. Guess if really want that job or a particular one need to really familiarize yourself with the company. Sounds got put on the spot and panicked a bit. Guess like creative competitions takes practice.

Photo/creative competitions don't usual enter. Definitely need more practice. Some lessons learnt lighting and shadows spoiled a lot of pics I took. I did think about what subjects to take pictures of and why, and how that related to the competition. I was more focused on the "creativity" of subject. Thou being questionable "suggestive" skipped my mind completely. Also despite researching the statues there was no mention about being moved.:( It happened like a couple of days earlier. Doh! Didn't think about time of day and lighting enough. Basically know nothing about photography apart from a quick google on the way there tsk. I did send the pics to a good friend to quickly check a couple. A way to learn another hobbie/skill and comp at the same time maybe even add to a resume.

Hopefully can relate all that to your job interviews. Like the blogs and forum get a feeling what is required and tips etc for competitions. Nothing is guaranteed, it's about improving your chances making to the final few. Then it can get subjective on the judges on the day. Job interviews is just another skill based competition. :)

@toxicgherkin Note things to keep under the bed. A handyman, a lawyer and IT help. hehe.

Looks like I have to head to South Melbourne as they merged the Malvern office with the South Melbourne office. Just finished a chat with "plug" Scorptec Computers exchanging my details etc. Just waiting on confirmation when I can pick it up. X fingers can score a free mug as well as broke the last one from them. lol. That's my $99 worth of free plug for them. hehe

Lemond
20 Apr 16 10:12 AM

@Lemond re interview... Spent best part of the day concentrating on the physical job I was going for, remembering a co I read up on almost 2 weeks ago & getting the call as I walked out of the interview wasn't going to happen. :-)

Took & uploaded the coffee photo & put it out of my mind lol Next time will put some thought into it ...

Job interviews are becoming ageist. If you aren't in your 20s your odds of winning are 400/1 or 1000/1. Depending on the company.

Not only skills but being part of the 20 something group come into play.

Anna2077
20 Apr 16 10:24 AM

@Annaar You never know your luck with the competition. Sometimes keeping it simple is best. Over thinking might looked a bit staged. It comes down to the judges and what they are looking for. The main tips mentioned in the blogs about including the promoter in the answer etc etc. Aim was to do something that hopefully stands out from the crowd and have fun. :)

I understand what your talking about if age means fitting into their "culture".
You need to turn that thinking about and use experience/wisdom to your advantage. Depending on age there may be government incentives for employing older people. Don't let the "competition" dictate your prospects of perusing your goals.

Lemond
20 Apr 16 10:50 AM

@Annaar The competition seemed too good of an opportunity to pass down. Would be around 100ish entries, most looking the same with one or two with any "creative" input. So if ticked off the boxes and put any effort in the odds looked good, especially for a valuable prize. God you can get 1,000 entries for a candle lol.

The competition had enough "hurdles" to keep the odds great. i.e. They only made about 3,000 cups of coffee in Sydney according to their FB page. Of those a small percentage were told about the competition as most were probably passing by and were just interested in the free great coffee. Took their pic on the spot then got rid of the cup. Then an even smaller percentage had read the T&C's and kept the cup for later.

I can see why some compers get regular wins with skill/creative competitions, especially if got a natural flare or talent for the particular competition. Like cooking competitions some are just natural with great ideas.

One comping secret must be spotting these type of hurdles that automatically get rid of most of the "competition".

Overall must be under 1/10 chance if I managed to tick off some boxes.

Now you can use that same thinking for jobs. Like of 1,000 people who makes the effort etc. Ie. good resume which is appropriate for that job being applied for and not just a default one, actually read the application requirements and researched the company, actually has the skills required etc. Breaking down the big problem of getting that job into a series of smaller hurdles to overcome. EG. Age just being one hurdle that you flatten out with the right approach. Turn that frown/bottle upside down. :)

In IT all about ability of breaking down a large task into a series of smaller ones. Then breaking it down even further into simplest form. Maybe you need to do a list, breaking down what is required then tick off each hurdle. Each time look how you can improve for that hurdle for next time or what worked well.

Lemond
20 Apr 16 10:59 AM

@Lemond The problem I've encountered is that I get interviewed by 20 something I'd be working with and not management... they dictate.... then again if I have a problem I start thinking of other ways of digging myself out of it. A 20 something year old usually passes the buck :-)

Need to keep on trying and hitting my head against many doors till one opens lol

Anna2077
20 Apr 16 12:22 PM

@Lemond They did a good promo for the coffee as I walked by... majority of us got nice cups and not cups with labels on them... may be it to discourage us from entering a comp lol

Aust Sq has a statue, should have placed coffee by it if i thought of it at the time, but I didn't... the coffee didn't even take the edge off the massive headache I managed to get by the end of the interview ... always a next time.

Sometimes it's easy to be creative on the fly, other times it takes some thinking :-)

Regarding CV... if the ads were honest I would have been able to play word games with my CV prior to applying. Since most ads are generic, word games are impossible.. Computer scans for certain words and if you hit certain % a human looks at it, if not it's auto rejection.

Anna2077
20 Apr 16 12:30 PM

@Lemond The 3k cups in Sydney over a few days is nothing, as people dropped in for a free cuppa and a smoke.

Might get a 100 entries if that.

Some enter all tiny comps as they NEED everything that's going, so 1000's entries for a candle that costs $10 is not unusual

Anna2077

How many competitions do people enter each month?

Just for this last week I've done 78 lets see if can make it 100 by tonight lol.

Lemond
15 Apr 16 8:23 PM

78? not from this site alone lol ... I'm lucky to enter a few a day, go for days without entering any

Anna2077
15 Apr 16 9:02 PM

JT news comps aren't open for all states as it states... guess I would enter but I need to pay air fare and accommodation if I was to win... damn was going to enter ...

Anna2077
15 Apr 16 9:04 PM

@Annaar Mainly sourced via Facebook. Not all are Facebook entry. Going on a random Australian discovery comping binge. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXcFDdBxXFs

@Annaar lol watching the the Melbourne International Comedy on TV. :) Gee bagging Frankston. Least I lived in the good parts of South Frankston. You just worry when the ones from North Frankston move into your house. Then you leave quickly. It's like Broadmedows meets Toorak.

15 Apr 16 9:47 PM

Too many competitions to share on here. It would take me all night and a few pages to post up.

Lemond
15 Apr 16 9:52 PM

@Lemond thank you!! Went out 2 dinner, had 2 margaritas... Delish

Anna2077
15 Apr 16 10:00 PM

@Lemond think I need to put a bit more effort into searching for comps :-)

Anna2077
15 Apr 16 10:01 PM

@Annaar should just add me to Facebook it will keep you busy least for this month. All my Facebook notifications go off like a pin ball machine. Must get lucky sooner or later.

off hand lottoland got a free share of syndicate entry into tomorrow lotto for all entries to like and comment.

Lemond
15 Apr 16 10:08 PM

@Annaar :) Dinner sounded nice. The 2 margaritas should you help for those creative competitions or watching comedy :)

Lemond
15 Apr 16 10:12 PM

@Lemond no create comps to be seen tonight, not even wol!!

Dinner was nice, took the edge off, been long & crappy week with job searching.. Next week will be carbon copy.

Entered a comp a while back 'win movie + 52 dinners delivered' ... Didn't win, didn't expect to as they don't deliver to my area.., just wanted the DVD LOL.

Received an email today, telling me that I'm getting 10% discount from 1st delivery lolol

Mine would probably be mostly Facebook but I would say approx 50-100 each week. It used to be more when I went on all the comping sites but freetime is getting harder to find these days.... Waiting for a big win so I don't have to work anymore lol

Alittlebitoffun
15 Apr 16 10:51 PM

@Alittlebitoffun 100 a week is good going. Facebook have a lot of pop up competitions so need to get in quick and notice closing times. Explains the regular wins. :)

Yeh it can take time searching for competitions. Especially initially while learning know how to search more efficiently.

Popular brands can attract a lot of entries on FB in the thousands. Tonight was doing a random journey via checking out other "compers" on FB who had entered multiple competitions. Needs to be more males doing competitions. Sigh all those women clothing and makeup competitions.

One FB account seem to love competitions involving darts giveaway. Didn't know was any, or so many for that subject. Was very particular probably related to a couple of interest sites.

Found a few creative ones to enter later. One there for Optus for a phone closes next Wed WOL. So far not that many entries. Well cats out of the bag now.

The problem with the popular competition site listed ones attract lots of entries. Came across a few that seem to go under the radar. Don't ask me which ones done too many today. lol

Damn my random daily points thou this last 8 days. Top 20 going to be a struggle even with a birthday bonus.

Lemond
16 Apr 16 12:24 AM

@Annaar Well doing the odd competition. Odds are unless it's a creative skill base and tick all the boxes and clicks with the judges going to be a wait between wins. Unless really lucky.

Have to think on average how many people are entering even for low interest ones your looking at over 1/100 chance. Well sometimes for large giveaways like my win today must of been very short odds. More of a first in to get the sample competition with 200 been given away. At least was a pick me up for the day.

Sometimes find creative comps with not many entries. I reckon the DeLonghi won't have many entries. I can't find many so far from Melbourne doing a search. People more interested in the free coffee. :) For such a valuable prize about $4000 retail in value about the best odds to value I've seen period!

Looks like under 50. One good pic I like. Most look the same with little creativity. I must get creative this weekend. :)

Lemond
16 Apr 16 12:39 AM

Blimey! I thought I was doing good with entering about 5 comps per day. I am fussy about what I enter though. I don't usually enter Random Entries unless it is a really good prize.

gaseja
16 Apr 16 8:04 AM

@gaseja I'm fairly fussy :) Was more an random exploration trail to find the ones I liked. Realistically thou you need to enter 1,000 random draws to pick up a couple of wins. I should do some of those creative ones, at least for some practice.

Lemond
16 Apr 16 8:39 AM

@Lemond don't forget that some people enter anything & everything... As long as they win.

I try entering 5-8 per day, but lucky to find 1 that I really want , limiting my chances of winning

Anna2077
16 Apr 16 9:21 AM

@Annaar :) Turning into a comping monster this week.
Hit 101 comps and counting for the week lol. OMG

Hungry! Hungry! And I'm hungry.. Feeeeed meeeee! Feeeeed meeeee!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaUqrXqdpXA

On that note I'm off to lunch and afterwards get those photos done for the creative coffee comp. :)

Lemond
16 Apr 16 12:23 PM

@Annaar Yeh you can't be too fussy. At worse possibly sell the win and buy what you wanted to win. Someone wins with a bargin and you get what you wanted. Also great way to try out products you wouldn't usually buy, not a priority or just hate shopping. :)

Lemond
16 Apr 16 12:33 PM

@Lemond enjoy lunch!! Hate shopping with a passion lol

Might have to try becoming comp hungry for a few days & see how I feel :-)

Anna2077
16 Apr 16 12:56 PM

@gaseja I'm fussier then you lol

I'm lucky to enter 10 comps a week, not good odds if I want to win :-)

Anna2077
16 Apr 16 1:58 PM

@Annaar Yes you really need to up your odds.

gaseja
17 Apr 16 2:42 PM

@gaseja I know :-) Haven't entered anything today ....

Anna2077
17 Apr 16 3:03 PM

@Annaar Sounds like you need some motivation

gaseja
18 Apr 16 10:34 AM

@gaseja need a few comps to get my attention ...

Anna2077
18 Apr 16 12:37 PM

@Lemond thank you :-)

Got an email that I didn't win $250 voucher but $50 off a meal with pre requisite that I spend $150 on a meal in a particular place and a particular time ... lol like I don't spend enough

Anna2077
18 Apr 16 5:28 PM

@Annaar lol. So saying get a 33% discount if spend $150 etc. :(

Hmm I must of entered a competition with Careers Australia recently. Looks like they busy sending me SMS over the last week.

Lemond
18 Apr 16 5:33 PM

@Annaar Looks like toxic's been having fun with the camera today for a competition. He needs to do a lady and the tramp scene with his lovely dog. hehe

Lemond
18 Apr 16 5:35 PM

@Lemond avoid career one comp like the plague lol

Anna2077
18 Apr 16 5:47 PM

@Lemond i received 3 emails like that today ... thanks but no thanks :-) It's not a win!!! I don't have a spare $100 plus for each of the comps... some want me to spend $200+

Anna2077
18 Apr 16 5:49 PM

@Annaar That's not a competition. That's a discount disguised as a competition.

Lemond
18 Apr 16 5:57 PM

@Lemond true! No way of knowing until they contact you....

Anna2077
18 Apr 16 6:17 PM
P

@lemond. How do you keep track of how many competitions you enter?

Poppysmum
22 Apr 16 8:15 AM

@Poppysmum lol. I just did a post elsewhere looking for a better way looking at automatic daily reminders using chrome extensions. That method looking has potential still a work in progress and learning curve. Looking at calendar and task managers, like send to calendar. Not sold on them yet bit cumbersome and not quite suited to manage competitions easily so far.

Well the more important part being notified for when you win. Hopefully got some watchful eyes out. One good reason to share competitions.

A number of ways
1) Organised Bookmarking
Each month I create separate bookmark folder with folders for Entered, Facebook Comps, Gleam Comps, WOL, To Share.
When I bookmark, I've just started added the end date to the beginning of the bookmark name to try and help.

2) Facebook
I post the competition on my page and put the end and draw dates in the description.
Turn on notifications for the page only (options under the like page). Don't put notifications on a competition post. I did that once lol.
I check my FB notifications regularly. Even with just page notifications on it sounds like a pokie machine going off at times.

3) Organise emails
I keep a separate folder for competitions entered. Also wins not many there yet!
I get a lot of emails for confirmation of entry , subscriptions etc
I need to sort out the emails better. Slight mess.

4) Posting to the forum
I occasional post on this forum as a reminder for myself and to share comps
There should of been one about a week or two below somewhere. I've been lazy to check it. Just reminded me. :)

Overall definitely need to look into a more automated way.

Lemond
22 Apr 16 8:42 AM

@Poppysmum For the number of competitions I can count the number of bookmarks in my April Entered folder. For my bookmark system I may do multiple bookmarks for a competition get one for entered, another for Facebook. etc I guess could also give just a FB entry count or Gleam entry etc.

It's not 100% correct think I've missed few bookmarks hehe
Approx 130 this month. Mainly from about April 8 to just now. hehe

Lemond
22 Apr 16 8:46 AM

@Lemond spread sheet works for me :-)

Anna2077
22 Apr 16 10:39 AM

@Lemond Have you heard anything from de Longhi? not seen anything on fb, insta, nor email ... got a call this am telling me that the job was a no go since I have way to much experience. Crap excuse lol

Anna2077
22 Apr 16 10:41 AM

@Annaar Yeh I 'm sure a spreadsheet works great for how many competitions??? Does it allow to click on a link to go to that webpage etc for daily competitions?

Lemond
22 Apr 16 1:54 PM

@Lemond link in the column who's comp it is :-)

Anna2077
22 Apr 16 2:18 PM

@Annaar Yeh. Thought about that with hyperlinks etc. Still if doing hundreds of competitions. hehe.

I would like automatic daily reminders especially for multiple entries etc. Yeh could do a database with forms etc my forte. Technical issues with full automation. Aim is to just click a button, find the end and draw dates stripped from the T&C's or page, classify if multiple entry/daily then set up reminders. Usually most reminders would be for end date/draw date or approaching end date if it's a WOL. So could have default reminders set up at a selected time/s. Gets a touch more complex for international competitions.

Excel hmm for simple or just a few yeh be fine. It gets a bit complex with multiple entry and different types of competitions. Still takes time to manage and put in the competition details, link etc etc. Good tool to use to prototype the idea thou.

Aim is to integrate it into a browser as that is how you enter most competitions. Possible use a local database for the back end and chrome etc for the front end. Guess some people might want to access it while offline so keeping the data local good idea.

Copyright ideas there might be one competition I could use those ideas for. :)

Lemond
22 Apr 16 3:20 PM

@Lemond I filter dates. As I don't enter 000's per month it works for me :-)

Anna2077
22 Apr 16 4:45 PM

@Annaar :) And 000 wins this month? hehe

Come on Annaar. I'm going to have to get the whip out. For this week that's one nice win each for a couple of my favorite compers. Your turn now. :)

So what type of prizes and competitions you looking for?
Share in 42 million?
Jewelry?
Electronics?
New outfit?
Dashing young man lol Well I might have problems finding that prize.

Lemond
23 Apr 16 12:36 AM

@Lemond I don't win a comp a week :-) Won Opera tix & had to let them go as I made plans I couldn't escape.

Would be nice to have a win every other week ... Since I only enter comps I really want & not every comp that comes up :-)

Anna2077
23 Apr 16 12:56 AM

@Annaar I know fussy. lol. If know what type of prize and competition you like. :) Easy if got on contact on facebook. :) Lot easier to share competitions etc.

You got to play the odds. Or find lot of similar prizes not always going to find exactly what you want. You know it's a great way to test out things you wouldn't normally think of buying etc.

Lemond
23 Apr 16 1:03 AM

@Lemond movie tix, DVDs, opera/ theater tix, dining out.. every little bit helps. right? lol If I were to win many t hings I don't need, would only end up taking everything to a hospital or charity... would rather someone who really wants it, wins it

Anna2077
23 Apr 16 1:56 PM

@Annaar

How do you determine who "really needs it"? Most competitions are marketing a product which no one "really" needs it, unless it cash. :)

The SDD I won has come in very handy. It's not high value but still helps. :)

I guess for competitions where do you draw the line for entering trivial things? Personally defiantly would comes to essentials regarding children items unless you got them or plan on having them soon. Also generally prizes aimed at women. I don't also usually do competitions for pets thou once or twice as a gift idea for friends. :)

Would I be wrong entering a competition for "women" jewelry worth $500 or yourself for a mens? For selling small items won etc hmmm bit of a too much effort, but not excluding the possibility, more likely to gift and make a friend happy. I know the worse case I could just put it on a table in the building, It must be a Jewish tradition that I've seen a few times. Occasional something is put out which I've found use for. Yeh like a dinning table when I moved in. :)

I'm not saying enter competitions for things you definitely wouldn't have the need for. More sounds like unnecessarily limiting yourself. Need a good dose of motivation :).

There would be cases someone wins a 2nd prize etc and the prize they desired didn't suit them and depending on the value might sell it etc. The world revolves on either use, gift, barter or sell it. Like @Inwithachance stated it's a win win someone gets a bargain and you can buy what you really need. Or can gift items to friends or relatives as a thank you. :)

With random draws you can't pick and choose when you will win. It's playing the numbers game. There's a world of competitions out there. What is displayed on this site is only a small sample. If look hard enough you will come across thousands of competitions that would suit you.

Lemond
23 Apr 16 6:12 PM

@Lemond I know what I like, what nearest and dearest like, as well as friends, based on the gifts I get them. I've not heard any complaints yet, and trust me if they didn't like it, I'd know about it.

I don't like perfumed soaps, candles nor do I enter jewellery comps as my tastes are simple.

I used to enter baby comps when a friend was expecting, now that she had bub I stopped. Don't enter comps for pets as I don't have any nor does anyone else I know...

As I'm dreadful at selling things, I don't enter comps so that I can sell my wins.

ONLY enter what I really want... it's not limiting myself... what's the point of me just winning for the hell of winning a trinket and missing out on something that i really want? Cannot win it all!!

Anna2077
24 Apr 16 12:53 PM

@Annaar Argh sounds like a misunderstanding with the tone of the reply. Not a case of trying to win it all etc, totally understand the point. More you can't expect to win on demand for that prize you want. I wish it was that simple. So far with what little I have won it's been fate. :) If it was a car etc be headaches what to do with it. Maybe the catalyst to get around to a licence and allocating a car space etc.

It's great to win something can gift to good friends as a thank you. I'm doing one now for that purpose. It would be great as a surprise gift as they have meant a lot to me over the years. X fingers.

So what type of prizes/competitions do you like?
Especially if it's NSW only competitions that I pass over. Atm I'm getting a lot of competition on my feed that I pass over. Most of the time I don't check what competitions are posted here. I just quickly tick them off as viewed. Usually by the time they are posted here I've already entered the ones I'm interested in.

Hope your having a good long weekend. :)

Lemond
24 Apr 16 7:30 PM

@Lemond Didn't mean to come across like I misunderstood, Just explaining that I only like very little that companies care to flog :-)

So far I've mostly ONLY entered movie, play, opera tix, DVD give aways... a few dinners, some CDs & gift cards for restaurants.

When a 'friend' was expecting I entered baby comps ... call me low maintenance if you like, if going to the Opera and Dinner is considered low maintenance LOL

I used to buy books on Amazon for gifts, recipients always loved them.. moved on to giving hand made artisan chocs... spent an obscene $700 on chocs one year...

Now it's a mix of chocs, and restaurant vouchers and a few things home grown...

Some comps I've entered week or so before they come up here...

Once in a blue mood a few electricals are given away, and if my appliance at home is getting too old in the tooth I enter...

Enjoy the rest of the weekend... cannot believe it's Sunday already...

Anna2077
24 Apr 16 7:53 PM

@Annaar It's cool it had a hmm stern formal tone to it. lol Aim was to be helpful sounded like got that the stick with all you didn't want. hehe

Well for gift cards of restaurant if it hasn't been posted in this site. I can never recall exactly what competitions are lol.

There is a creative competition for a $1,000 dollar prize. https://www.facebook.com/goodfoodau/photos/a.523834897644269.129089.49249972077
7787/1263555650338853/?type=3&theater

I got my eye on that one. If I get around to finishing it by Wednesday you might have some competition :). I liking my idea on both fronts for the place and reason. I just need to put some time in. Less time posting here. hehe

Most the answers I've seen are same old responses. A lot wanting to eat at the same "best" restaurant money can buy. Nothing wrong with going to say the Attica or Fat Duck in Melbourne etc I just find going somewhere like that too "formal and stuffy". A lot of responses for those from Vic entries or similar for other states. To stand out they would need a good reason to catch the eye of the judges. To get to the final cut need to tick off all the boxes like a place that promoter might love to review etc and reasons why like to go there with chosen friends. I don't think rhyme is a good option, seen a few of those. They make me ill reading those. I lot don't explain why or little effort. Some thinking it's a random draw. You can eliminate about a third of responses before you start. Like job interviews good percentage fail to read the T&C's of the application. lol
Good Luck if entering. :)

Movie tickets and restaurants not usually on my radar. Initially I passed that restaurant competition over to my good friend who aim to give it to if win. I tried to convert a good friend to the dark side of comping yesterday. Treading carefully, I don't it will happen. lol Didn't think would even have an clue for that comp. Just something out of the blue I recalled the place. I haven't been there. Trying hard not to drop any clues in case anyone else reading might use it. Then I'll have to standout with a well explained reason. Would love to share it. Will do after competition closing. You will understand then why I like the idea so much. :)

Lots of chocolate ones out there. Reminds me a must be a ton of those I haven't done yet with Mother's day coming up, be plenty of those about on FB. Hmm be too tempted to eat them all. Most my good friends keep fit. Might be one I can pass them off them to stop me from going on a chocolate binge lol.

Also looking for electricals, fridge, TV, washing machine, new phone, latptop/computer equipment high on the list (mines still going but least 7-8 years old), furniture vouchers. Last year I moved and didn't have much apart from a nice bed. Could do with a new mattress and some nice quilt/covers add that to the list. hehe

Lemond
25 Apr 16 9:37 AM

Couldn't get a seat at Attica 5 months prior to my trip.. Apparently they are the best ... Arrgghh love reservations attitude lol

Fat Duck was on my radar! Sadly missed the ballot. Was one of 250k who applied for 14k seats. Still a bit disappointed. Once in a lifetime experience...

Movies are expensive & winning tix allows me to go.
Not all Chocs are created equival. The kind I like are never part of giveaways... Can only get them as a gift or if I buy them :-)

Thank you for the link .. Currently in the middle of writers block, haven't blogged in 9 months... A lot to catch up on. LOL

Re Fat Duck, hackers managed to rig the ballot & managed to get 2000 seats, they were selling them 2 to 4 times its original value on gumtree & eBay.
Since I'm not in Melbourne I didn't go on waiting list as I couldn't get there in an hour or so nor did I imagine anyone cancelling .

Anna2077
25 Apr 16 10:20 AM

@Lemond Ta for the heads up! This one is done and dusted ... not holding my breath lol

As I never win anything this big :-)

Anna2077
25 Apr 16 1:05 PM

@Annaar Good luck. Well I guess you would have a rough idea based on entries already in. :) I haven't looked at it today was resting. The idea is digesting. :) Basically got the idea, done a brainstorm for what key words want to mention. I needs now to be tossed in the air hopeful fall into place.

You can enter multiple times I think.

Lemond
25 Apr 16 4:42 PM

@Lemond Was one of my on the fly entries, what ever first came to mind LOL Need to thank a few people and taking them to dinner would be a nice way of doing it, at least I hope :-)

Anna2077
25 Apr 16 6:37 PM

@Annaar I agree I've got some good friends that would love to spoil to say thank you. Thou, if got lucky be so emotional to thank them. My problem with my main choice I, hope I don't have to attend and can gift/transfer to my good friends. I might meet him if was required. Not exactly local however they are travelling there in the next couple of months. One hint it's not in St kilda. hehe

Yeh its a great way to say thank you to friends. :) More "valuable" then any prize can give.

Lemond
25 Apr 16 9:23 PM

@Annaar Damn sneaky of competitions.com.au posting up a late comp ending today. I hope @CeCee14 spots it before it expires tonight. Looks like a close fight for the top few on the leader board. :)

Lemond

@Lemond Most places that I can think of Restos in Melbourne aren't in St Kilda... do go somewhere nice to dinner, you might enjoy it and never want to stop :-)

Anna2077
26 Apr 16 12:21 PM

@Lemond Thank you for this! I saw that! Don't know about this chocolate but Lombardo is awesome.. hand made. (Lombardo chocs are great for gifts)

Anna2077
26 Apr 16 12:23 PM

@Annaar The eating contest I'm not sure if that was the competition listed on this site. I got distracted thinking about chocolate and came across this at the same time. Looks like on May 7th Prahran Market are having a one day Chocolate festival in Melbourne. I might see if my mates are interested.

Out of fun I entered the eating contest. I hope I don't win that ballot. Have the weird feeling no one else has entered. Oh the shame. lmao. Not sure what the prize even is. The Prahran market is just a quick tram up the rd. I might check out the festival.

The competition posted is for double passes to the festival for exculsive tasting I think etc. Entry is free what I've read. :)
Details here of the festival in Melbourne.

Yeh there will be handmade Lombardo there. :)

@Lemond Sometimes entry to main part is free but exclusive side of the even is user pay ... enter, doesn't hurt. Always someone who wants togo!

Anna2077
26 Apr 16 2:21 PM

lots but i win lots too so worth it

Andieharrie
27 May 16 7:10 AM

@Andieharrie Yeh for random draws you got to play the numbers game by entering in "lots" i.e. a few hundred at least depending on the odds for the competitions you're entering. If can find competitions with good odds and great prizes is a bonus.

If you got a natural skill for creative/skill bases or willing to jump over a few hurdles where most compers don't you give yourself a good chance.

The biggest problem with entering lots of competitions you need to organise your comping.

15 Apr 16 10:48 AM

@Lemond Honestly I've got no idea how I got to #3. My husband has even started checking what Im at haha I WILL stay in the top 10. If I can stay at #3 I'll buy myself a bottle of Vodka for all my hard work ;)

CeCee14
15 Apr 16 11:53 AM

@CeCee14
lol. Yeh the daily random pick me up. Like a good coffee. :)

The birthday bonus of 50 points and at the moment in the hunt for third statistically, depends if any one else has a birthday. At the moment I need a good very good week for starters, so doubtful will challenge. I be 50/50 at the moment to scrap into the Top 20.

The statistically analysis so far using simulation

Last weekend I did a spreadsheet to simulate just the random daily points for on average how many points Top 3 etc would be. I did it for all 50 positions. It still a work in progress almost complete to do a full simulation with birthday effect included. Will update those figures I put up. On average be about 4 birthdays a month for 50 people.

If using mathematics I should really use cumulative density function. I'm a bit rusty so using a simulation. Also birthdays make it a bit more complex to use CDF.

Assumption 50 members for 30 days
Average is 765

Be looking at requiring about +75-120 above the average ie. 840 to 885 from memory to be a good chance of 2nd or 3rd. First from about 110 to 200 approx. At the moment your approx (24-7) + 50 = 67 above average. So hovering about 3rd to 6th statistically if rest of the month is "break even".

If there are no other birthdays, statistically you just need gain another 20-40 points on the average and be almost a sure bet in the Top 3. For first you need to beat FARMERTYSON score and not loose any points from competitions viewed in comparision. Even without a birthday FARMERTYSON score is statistically Top 2-3 if he just got "break even" scores for the rest of the month.

Notes:
From a few test simulations done so far.
Range approx +-200 from the average

For one birthday in a group of 50.
Birthday Effect on 50 members
Push up a from approx 30-35th to 20th Approx break even (765)
Push up from approx 10-6th to 3rd Approx +80 to 120
Push up from approx 6-7th to 2nd Approx +100-140
Push up from approx 2/3rd to 1st Approx +120 to 170

For overall leader board position you then start taking away every missed competition viewed, assuming top leader board members won't miss many.

@toxicgherkin @Annaar and anyone else considering upgrading an old Mac Pro.

A good article to read and video how to upgrade an old Mac Pro with a SDD.
http://www.cnet.com/au/how-to/upgrade-your-macbook-install-ssd-hard-drive/

The comments sound very positive and are great to get a feel for what is involved, other options available and issues you may encounter.

Also maybe add more ram. It should then run like the "fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy". Thou I wouldn't call a Mac Pro compared to my ancient PC a hunk of junk.

I wouldn't think a Apple store would be cheap to upgrade a old Mac Pro. For about $100-$300 depending on what size SDD and brand is chosen it should run "like" a new $3,000 laptop.

A couple years ago I had a similar issue with my ancient PC with a HDD that was dying. A 256GB SDD brought it back to life to boot off and going fairly strong. The painful part is migrating the OS from an old HDD, especially if its failing. I did a complete reinstall with a new OS. Cloning the HDD might be preferred especially want a keep settings/software/drivers etc. Recommended be organised first like having any drivers for hardware etc on a USB key. Cloning a HDD can be a slow process.

Lemond
13 Apr 16 7:29 PM

Nice size solid state HDD and gazillion MB of ram often fixes some problems...unless it's processor/motherboard/cards. Since on a mac book it's just one and cannot be replaced separately..

my last PC was killing me with the bios crashing, that was FUN! LOL.. had to get a brand new baby, there was no way to fix it... couldn't book from a disk, C drive was having issues LOL

Tried re formatting C drive while in it via good old DOS and it wasn't having any of it.. CNET are great when it comes to advice

@Annaar It's a great article with a good video and comments section on how to upgrade an old Mac Pro. Must be a few compers using old MAC's.

When looking to spend money on extending on old laptop/pc you need to weigh up the costs and if possible be used in a future "upgrade". Other option is to buy and sell it before it becomes worthless.

With most PC's etc made in the last few years they are likely to suit general purpose use for many years. Unlike past generations where there was a definite need to do a total overhaul and buy a new system/laptop regularly.

For my overhaul when it finally does happen the SDD and HDD which was bought relative recently will be part of the overhaul. Buying extra ram though would help for my current PC I only consider if really really cheap/free as that wouldn't be useful towards an "upgrade". Possibly my power supply might depending on the PSU requirements. I did have that replaced a few years back due to the first one dying.

SDD have many benefits from speed, power use/battery life, size, weight, heat and noise. They are significantly faster then a HDD. The worse case it would be handy backup option. Cost wise about $150 to $300 for a 256 to 512GB which should suit most needs.

I also regularly refresh the OS about once a year or so to sort out performance issues. I'm overdue for that. The secret is being prepared with having all OS, drivers and basic software like browser, video player and office software on USB. My emergency USB key.

Did you try booting from USB? Depending on your issue sounded it was most likely electronic either a power supply unit fault or motherboard. A faulty PSU can cause some headaches trying to work out what the problem is unless know the correct signs or can test on another PC. Possible your motherboard could of been rescued if it just required new drivers and was a faulty PSU. If the PC was a good 5 years it was probably time for an overhaul.

I was lucky that an old PSU bought from a good retailer which could test it on the spot and was under warranty. Most retailers would have no idea or the resources to test on the spot.

For a laptop I would highly recommend get a wireless keyboard and mouse. The last thing you want to do is kill the keyboard/pad etc on a laptop. Expensive and inconvenient to get fixed. If laptop keyboard is killed it's major decision time weighing up costs to repair. Goes for most laptop components unless it's the HDD or ram.

My system Intel Dual Core E8500, 2GB ram, SDD 256 GB Samsung 850 Pro, 3 TB HDD etc
It's about hmmm 8 years old at least. Going ok most of the time, it does gets some issues with overheating with the old graphics card and memory issues. It gets an annual removal of a dust blanket that builds up. It probably is due to be checked before next summer. For watching TV and internet browsing it runs fairly quickly it does however run into memory issues when get carried away with too many webpages open at once, when entering competitions. :(

The biggest concern is it power use. Probably the best reason to fast track an overhaul.

@Lemond I always spend ages on Toms hardware site reading about the parts., products etc

My old box was built by me & a techie. After my 1st purchased box died quickly (just out of warranty) ., all other machines have been home builds.

Now that they have a forum, easy to drop in & ask questions. Used to visit techs chat rooms in the old days & pick their brains. :-)

Anna2077
14 Apr 16 10:23 AM

@Lemond it wasn't booting from anything.. All options were exhausted, the guys online helped. Then I called techi read out all the error messages, he was telling me what to do. He said its bios & I need to start from scratch (new baby)

If he couldn't fix it, no one could ...

Anna2077
14 Apr 16 10:29 AM

@Annaar Hmm online tech support going through a script most of the time. Was there any life at all? Beeps etc. Usually motherboards make a series of beeps that correspond to a type of error. 50/50 it wasn't the bios but a faulty/dead power supply. Both have similar symptoms especially if the PSU isn't quite functioning correctly.

Doesn't matter you got it replaced saves the headache of trying to work it out of course at a cost $$$. :(

Was this a desktop or laptop?

I had a call from PCYC a few months back and I asked how the caller had gotten my number, the cheeky little man on the phone responded "we are a government charity so even if you have your name on the do not call list we are entitled to ring you anyway". I don't know exactly how true this information is but I was surprised at his cheek it was like he had that response written in front of him.

I've had so in the last 2 weeks. I have an iPhone so you can block the number. I'm sure you can do it on most mobiles. Also I don't answer private numbers. If they want to speak to me they will leave a voice mail message :)

Anna2077

@CeCee14 if a call originated at the call center then they have hundreds if not thousands numbers to call from... blocking one will achieve nothing

Anna2077
13 Apr 16 1:16 PM

@Annaar It works for me hence why I said it.
Most of the calls I've had are from mobile numbers. They are using new tactics. As for the land line numbers, they are mostly from the same number so blocking them works for me. They are also mostly interstate numbers but they are made from overseas.

Hello everyone. I'm new to comping.
I've looked through a few of the posts to try and get a better understanding about things.
Just wondering about the competitions that end up in 50 questions or surveys. Are these legit? I have created a seperate email but I can already see I might end up with a lifetime of spam from some of these comps and wondering if I should just skip these when they pop up.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Great that you first created a separate email account. Just remember to keep checking it regularly for any competition wins.
I not exactly sure which competitions result in a lifetime of spam. I get plenty of those. :( Those type of competitions you mentioned seem a likely candidate for spam, especially for calls.

Various social media are also used for a lot of competitions so a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram account etc may come in handy for entering competitions.

Import Duties and GST on competition prizes won

Is there any import duties and/or GST on prizes won for international competitions?

The only reference I can find so far is at the following link section 25:

Explaing goods valued over $1000 donated or gifted etc

Has anyone had experience with a winning a international competition and the prize incurred any duties/gst etc? Especially regarding electronics phones etc.

Occasional I come across terms and conditions where postage and other costs may be incurred. Generally it looks though postage is included with the prize win.

@MammaPigga84 I notice you regularly seem to miss about one guessing game each month. :( Is that just an oversight on your behalf each month, or do you feel their is an genuine issue with the not receiving points for the daily guessing game? Maybe for today you are doing a late login. :)

There seems a handful of compers are in a similar situation missing the odd guessing game while looking like got good random daily points. Most likely just forgetting to do the guessing game for a day, I would assume.

If you are having frequent issues with not receiving the points for the daily guessing game points, thou it appears intermittent, what do you feel could be the possible causes? EG particular a browser, bad internet connection or maybe thought was logged in when wasn't etc etc

Maybe there could be a nuance with the site like having to view a competition on the first day of the month before the random daily points starts or having to visit the home page first.

I haven't noticed any issues personally with missing points from the guessing game, unless I haven't logged in for the day.

If there is anyone having the issue with not receiving points from completing a daily guessing game? If so, any indications what it may be the cause?

Lemond

yeah just noticed that, not sure what happen, i enter everyday with guessing game. I thought it went through on my end :( strange

Mamma
10 Apr 16 11:24 AM

@MammaPigga84 :( I noticed late last night and thought strange. I recall you having that happen a few times over the last 6 months. Pity no closer to working out the probably cause. I guess double check the points after doing the guessing game in future. That way can notify the admin in time to fix it or find out the likely cause.

Hmm to do it once but a few times there must be some common link you're doing once in a while. It doesn't seem a widespread issue.

I suspect you might navigated the site in a particular way for why it didn't register. More likely logged out too quickly just after sending the guess. It could be anything from browser settings, to a connection issue at your end etc grasping at the usual straws with not much to go on.

It's not something I want to accidentally find out the hard way. I'm fairly careful with making sure I log out before midnight and also first visit the home page then the guessing game later. More due to the nuance around having to visit the home page to receive the daily points and the first day having to click on a competition first etc. Sounds like I'm touch superstitious. Showing my faith in the site. Rolls eyes.

Wish I could help you out more on that issue. It looks like the same issue might effect handful of members each month. Might be some common link between those members.

Best of luck.

Lemond

Mamma
10 Apr 16 8:27 PM

@MammaPigga84 Maybe. Could be a case of you need to refresh or visit the home page first. Possibly there is a mechanism to automatically log out after a set time period etc.

I'm fairly methodically with the log in process and visiting in order the home page first each day before doing anything else. My primary bookmark is the home page. Some of the sites nuances making me a bit wary.

Sigh not much luck with the daily random points for a few days. :( Thank god for the birthday bonus.

Well more of a perk then a win. Choice of options of "prizes" from Optus for my birthday. Think I will take the $10 e-gift card for Coles. Good as cash. :)

I wonder if there's any other good sites to quickly join if not too late for birthday offers.

Guess X fingers will get my bonus 50 points at midnight. Hmmm looks like we got some run away leaders on the random daily points. At least the Top 20 is currently looking realistic this month. :)

Also Happy Birthday to @FARMERTYSON for last weekend. :)

@toxicgherkin Gee I've been pushed up a category in the age details for competitions. Rubbing it in. :(
Makes me feel 10 years older. Next category should be labeled too old to remember if lying about my age.

08 Apr 16 12:54 PM

@Annaar Thanks. I'm not expecting any wins today as been a bit quiet entering competitions this last month. I will have to check the dreaded emails. Any takers? Warning may be a few .... thousand.

Hopefully in the next few weeks or month when the draws are due. Apart from that I need to knock a couple of runaways off the leaderboard or X fingers for the guessing game, my first whole week of double guesses. lol

Lemond
08 Apr 16 1:11 PM

@Lemond I'm in 6th which I'm very happy with. Last month I did EVERYTHING I had to do but I still came in 37th :( It makes it unfair if you don't get 2 guesses!

Happy Birthday I hope you win. Mines the 14th ;) Hoping for some wins for my Bday!

CeCee14
08 Apr 16 1:45 PM

@Lemond Then few comps that you'll enter today (birthday entry) will bring you wins :-) Sure, I'll scan through your spam folder ..... i'm good at deleting emails LOL... plenty of practice when former boss used to send through 10-15 emails a day ..eg. if you need me, I'll be in the loo, or going for coffee... need sugar hit, so back in a bit etc etc LOL

Anna2077
08 Apr 16 2:55 PM

@CeCee14 Thanks. :)

It's my first month since joining since last September to make the Top 20 and get the double guesses. Kind of a reward for active members doing the leaderboard etc. If you hang in there do all the requirements every day chances are should make the Top 20 about every 2nd month. Only takes a couple of minutes to log in a do the guessing game and tick off the competitions to view. :)

Occasional competitions to be viewed get missed. I usually keep a rough eye on how many competitions viewed by regular members to see if I've missed any. Sometimes competitions are posted late in the day that expire the same day. Fairly rare that is done.

There seems once in a while there is slight issue with adding to the competitions viewed count thou showing the competition as viewed. Many reasons why that might occur like loosing connection just at the wrong time etc. If that happens try toggling the competition options for saved/interested for each competition until found. It has an effect of refreshing it back to display to "Enter", if an error was made and not counted but showing as "Viewed". Note thou that will only work before a competition has expired. Can be bit like finding a needle in a haystack, else don't worry.

Ouch 37th its not the position that's bad, I know that would mean it was approaching @toxicgherkin stellar month. hehe It was a shocker well below the average random points. You're probably due for a few good weeks. X fingers:)

Looks like your off to a solid start for the month and with a birthday bonus a good chance even of the Top 3. Too early to tell yet by around end of week 3 you'll get a good idea. A couple of front runners doing extremely well so far. That luck bound to change soon.

My random points thou not bad this month are stalled in a holding pattern just above "break even". I'm hoping the birthday bonus might kick start them. X fingers. Secretly damn looks like going to be hard to get into the Top 3 unless I get a good dose of luck this month.

Expect a bumpy ride on the random points. :)

Good Luck

08 Apr 16 3:43 PM

@Annaar lol I did say a few ... thousand. How's 11089 sound. I deleted couple hundred so far today. I'm not winning that war. I'm sure I got it down to about 5,000 a couple of months ago.

Not many in the spam about 300 with the odd one that isn't spam. Annoying when confirmation emails for a competition get sent there.

lol TMI hmm internet loo can flush junk emails at the same time.

They didn't say anything new.

Anna2077
07 Apr 16 5:52 PM

Thanks for the post. Nothing too new. A good reminder of what is required to win. There were some good points that the blogs have previously mentioned regarding WOL competitions.
I recently mentioned about having a separate email for comping. If only I had stuck to that tip or done that from the start. My biggest win a lifetime supply of spam email. Doh

08 Apr 16 12:09 AM

Everyone goes after small prizes, as they make great Christmas presents... The odds of winning them are never great :-)

I wanted one of the DVDs for myself, entered 6 different comps in hope to win one copy & still had no luck. :-)

Anna2077
08 Apr 16 9:54 AM

@Annaar The exception might be if there's little interest in the DVD prize. It might explain my DVD win last year. :)

How's those 3 competitions for going today? Have you done them yet? :)

I wonder if @toxicgherkin finally got that Sharknado DVD hehe

Lemond
08 Apr 16 10:13 AM

hehe...yes, finally received, with Sharknado-themed bonuses. The promoter was liaising with the supplier. Supplier claimed they had despatched or attempted to dispatch goods three times earlier. I confirmed all my details yet they had no tracking number, simply being sent as a general postal item. Poor form. When goods arrived, they were damaged - crushed. Not impressed.

toxicgherkin
08 Apr 16 11:09 AM

@toxicgherkin hehehe Well that has brightened up my day. Gee I hope the DVD survived. Nothing would be more frustrating for a comper not receiving a prize or having to wait months to receive it. Looks on the odd occasion there has been cases of promoters not sending out a prize. Someone not receiving a TV comes to mind. I've come across people that have received additional prizes if there has been a delay on a prize being sent as an apology. Think was regarding a Samsung competition.

I'm happy that you finally got it. :) So how was the movie?

DVD copy of Miss You Already They say it worth $34.95 but I wouldn't pay that much for a DVD these day :)
I must say I was very surprised that Id won as this is the second win from MiNDFOOD in a month.

@bj74 On competitions.com.au seems that way just from how many competitions to tick off last couple of months. It might be just the time of year. I don't know how it usually compares for this time of year. I would guess the number of competitions would be dependent on the season and when products are being promoted.

I've Won | Primped - Win a Rosehip by Esano Gift Pack

Yay, came home to a surprise win, a lovely pack of Rosehip skin care. Love the surprise wins!! It's been a decent few weeks. A Wonder Woman funko pop, huge ABC cook book pack including a signed Donna Hay DVD, kids batman v superman bedroom pack, movie tickets, Disney Lion Guard pack, bakers delight vouchers, wine, lots of awesome stuff to put away for the kiddies (not the wine, they aren't getting that lol). anyone getting more sales calls lately? just got one now - they even left a voice mail message, some guy named GARY. Did anyone get the same call?

Mamma
04 Apr 16 8:03 PM

Yep! I've started to not answer my phone if I don't know the number.
If you have an iPhone you can block the number as they normally call from the same number.

CeCee14
05 Apr 16 11:41 AM

yeah have been blocking heaps. Just cant believe how many calls im been getting lately which i def have not op into. so some competitions must sell the info out

Mamma
05 Apr 16 3:50 PM

Oh they definitely do. It's extremely annoying. I've had a lot from overseas.

CeCee14
06 Apr 16 9:41 AM

Getting the same the last few days. I suspect in my case it's directly related to doing a odd entry on OFFERX site this week. That site has all the warning signs that it will result in spam calls regardless if you say yes/no to any options.

Same if I don't know the number I don't answer. I just hope there wasn't any competition wins I missed.

Any hints what competitions or sites it might be related to? It would be nice to have an informal list of sites/competitions to be wary of with this sort of practice. Maybe all related to a recent popular competition posted.

Lemond
08 Apr 16 12:21 AM

Honestly its to hard to tell. It could be from any of them. Just because they say they don't pass on our information doesn't mean they don't. They can sell the list for $1000's to random companies & that pays for the prizes!

CeCee14
08 Apr 16 10:15 AM

@CeCee14 Some it is hidden in the fine print what they intend to do with your contact details. Was hoping compers might have an indication of competitions/promoters are more likely to do this practice. Some it's more obvious when you have to answer a bunch of yes/no questions to various unrelated parties for a competition. Cohort run competitions I think notorious for that.

I haven't thought about it like that. Probably a business model widely used. Hold a competition and have it directly pay for itself. Then from a pure brand/product exposure. A lot of travel competitions hint at unethical or dubious marketing ploys aimed at recovering some costs for the competition directly from "winners" even.

I had one call last year claiming to be a "winner" for a cruise for a competition I entered. Attempting to lure you in with the excitement of a win. I patiently listened, all the time extremely cautious waiting for the catch. Sure enough got all the warning signs of unethical tactics to pressure into accepting and requiring credit card details etc to confirm the win. Before having a good think what would accepting the win actually cost. I think the general rule of thumb for travel competitions unless planning on a trip and offers substantial genuine savings like at least 95% on all costs treat it with caution.

Lemond
08 Apr 16 10:40 AM

@Lemond Lucky you were smart enough to work that out. Unfortunately some people go with it & end up getting burnt so to speak.

I've also noticed with the ones that do "offers" from other companies they ask Yes/No questions BUT sometimes hitting no is actually what they want so you are agreeing to being contacted even though you said no. They are trick questions. You have to make sure you read them before answering. I fell for it & have learnt my lesson ;)

I've only been doing this for about 6 weeks now. I have realised that some comps really aren't worth entering. You have to pick & choose. I think the more well known the company the better!

CeCee14
08 Apr 16 1:21 PM

@CeCee14 Just did one competition, well I hope it was a competition like that. Hidden under the big confirm button to enter was a link saying click here if wish not to be contacted. Could of easily been missed. Usually I avoid those types of competitions. Yeh sometimes trick yes and no to confuse you. Sometimes come across those as well.

Facebook seem the best for not getting cold calls and spam emails as they rarely ask for phone numbers etc. Gleam competitions the same thou need social media accounts. I don't notice much spam that could be of a result from those either.

Lemond
08 Apr 16 4:20 PM

yeah i learnt about fine print. But even though you tick no, you still get the companies calling you.

The blogs give very helpful advice and tips on how to improve your chances to win etc.

I would recommend first getting a separate email account for comping. Where its' name doesn't reflect it is a comping only account, just in case some terms and conditions of competitions cover that. Most likely comping will attract lots of spam emails. Most competitions are fine the odds are will occasional come across some that will result in a lot of spam. That way if decide to stop comping etc you won't be left with a lifetime of spam emails in your personal account.

The disadvantage is you have to remember to check the comping account so don't miss the wins. :)

Good Luck and have fun

gaseja
04 Apr 16 7:43 AM

law of averages the more you do the more chance you will win , don't enter crap comps for little value unless you really want it

@gaseja Agree. Lessons you learn trying to gauge what works for WOL etc. I guess depends on the judges and who is the promoter and if it suits their marketing. Seems could be out of style in general :)

Lemond

@Theboywithathorninhisside Ah yes, what is that old phrase "The more I try, the luckier I get".

Keep a record of the Facebook competitions you enter. Not all of them will notify you and you have to go back and check if you have won. If the winner doesn't message them, some will redraw and you miss out. I just use Excel and put the date of draw and paste the URL of the competition.

Di_D
06 Apr 16 9:12 AM

@Di_D Good point. :) One thing that seems to help for those cases is to have good fellow compers entering the same competitions keeping a rough eye out for each other. :) Good Luck for those Facebook competitions.

Lemond
06 Apr 16 6:01 PM

@Di_D On that point I wouldn't mind some more comper facebook friends. I find it also a good way to be notified easily of competitions to enter as well. It's the checking back like you mentioned you might miss wins. I would expect you as least get a notification from Facebook if you have been mentioned in a post if you're lucky enough to win. :)

I turn on the Notifications on Facebook as soon as I enter a comp so I can follow it because I notice that companies are getting smart and not tagging you when you win. It is up to you to notify them.
I also utilise the Save Link button especially if I want to think about my answer for a while.

gaseja
07 Apr 16 8:33 AM

@gaseja Great points regarding Facebook. I sometimes do that for a facebook competition. The only issue is getting constant emails/notifications regarding updates to their Facebook page. I must go through a few sites I've done that for previously and remove them. Some are handy thou if they have regular competitions as a reminder to check for new ones.

One of the major pitfalls of this site is not listing the draw date and only the end date. So having to remember when to check back if you have won. I know a spreadsheet has been mentioned. Wish there was a more automatic way to prompt to check back. :)

Lemond
07 Apr 16 10:47 PM

@Di_D Thanks. I've already got you on my short list of comper contacts. It's a very short list at the moment. It would be nice to add a few more fellow compers. I'm reluctant to hassle good friends with my comping. I've haven't yet been able to convert them to the dark-side . hehe

Mine is Mark Johnstone I should put some sort of avatar up to help you remember. I just added the dilbert comic strip about the random generator. I think that's a fitting profile avatar. hehe

Big thanks it's having a good effect of getting notified of competitions. Looks like helping each other out. Win Win all around. X fingers one of us will more regularly pick up wins.

Hopefully if the case arises that I miss a competition win on facebook will also have its rewards. I noticed a while back that @toxicgherkin had missed a win on Facebook and his loyal fan base notified him on here. How nice. :)
