The acclaimed 1993 picture marked the long-awaited directorial debut of Academy Award winning actor Robert De Niro, who helmed the picture with a screenplay from his co-star Chazz Palminteri. The coming-of-age film takes us to 1960’s New York and follows a boy caught between the guidance of two role models: his bus driver father (De Niro) and the neighbourhood crime boss (Paminteri).
“A Bronx Tale is a very funny movie sometimes, and very touching at other times,” critic Roger Ebert wrote in his ’93 review. “It is filled with life and colorful characters and great lines of dialogue, and De Niro, in his debut as a director, finds the right notes as he moves from laughter to anger to tears. What’s important about the film is that it’s about values.”
